So, I'm going to try the Brinsea Ecoglow Safety 600 this time instead of a heat lamp with day-old chicks, who are coming home Friday. Can anyone recommend a good starting height for the brooder panel for standard breeds (Barred Rock, Australorp)? The instructions say, "As a guide, for bantam chicks start with one end at 1 1/2" and the other at 3." However, there is no mention of a starting height for standards. I've never raised bantams so I'm not sure how they compare as chicks in terms of size.

It's hard to say exactly in inches. You want.it to it touches the chicks back when they stand up on the low side. def recommend doing one side a bit higher than the other in casw. They are slightly different sizes.

I did the 1.5 inch and 3 inch as recommended when I had standard chicks arrive from a hatchery 3 weeks ago. They can then move around to the area they want. You can adjust it up or down depending on their behavior. They wil cheep alot if they are cold. Be aware that the amount of chicks it covers is exaggerated, much like the prefab chicken coops! You may have to stuff the chicks under it in the beginning until they figure out that it is warm and cozy under there.
I love the ecoglow brooders though much better then heat lamps, more natural, cost effective and less fire risk!

Have a 9 day age difference between my little Polish and the huge silver laced Orpington chick but they all manage to get under there and stay warm!:)

Thank you all, your responses were very helpful! I will go ahead and just start with the 1.5 and 3 inches and see how they do. It's nice to see two different size chicks using the same height and doing fine.
