It seems there is nothing new under the sun, but I didn't know this would work til I tried it. My week-old chick broke his ankle when the surrogate hen went crazy and grabbed him, flipping him across the pen. (She got confined away from the chicks and another hen took over the crazy hen's chicks, giving her a total of 25 babies.)
Baby walked on the top of his ankle, with his folded foot underneath. We fashioned a small piece of firm milk jug plastic to fit under his foot with his toes straightened out, then taped it in place. He was able to stand normally, unable to fold the foot under. He wore the brace 4 days and then we removed it. He walked normally, without even a limp, and now three weeks later, he appears completely normal.
