hi my pet silkie hen jumped into a hole and landed hard on a large stone breaking the bone beneath the breast. is there any way to help this heal? will the bird live? my daughter is is going crazy with the fear of her dieing. any advice would be appreciated. thank you.

It is going to die most likely I had a bard rock rooster jump off my barn and break his leg and he died I wouldent take it to the vet that would be a waste of money just make sure she gets plenty of food and water and keep a close eye on it. Hope I helped God bless :D

thanks for the response. I noticed she started behaving normal once she got outside but she still isn't eating as much as usual. Its just a small break beneath her about an inch long. I have my fingers crossed that it will heal.

Is it visibly broken? If there is skin puncture the odds are very low but you should apply a chicken-safe antibiotic to any open wounds.

Maybe someone knows if there is a safe pain medication for chickens?

My hen broke her leg and recovered almost completely so that she is finally able to run again. But it was a slow process. I would do whatever needed to keep your chickens stress level down. If segregating her doesn't bother her then I would do that for now so she isn't hassled by any other chickens. She needs some calm, special treatment for at least the first few days. Keep the temp comfortable, food and water right where she can get it easily. I might even put some electrolytes in her water for a week or so.

Best of luck to you and your silkie!

One more thing-remember that ill and injured chickens will try their best to act normal in an attempt to fool predators. It would be best to segregate her for a day or two unless that will freak her out. Any excitement or stress in the flock will be hard on her.
