Does the cold have any effect on guineas claws? We are in N. Michigan. We never had any claw problems until the last month or so. Now half my guineas have broken off their claws, some more than one claw. It is a bloody mess and looks painful. To me it seems that the claws are really brittle. I picked up one bird to check her over. Her claw snagged on my coat and just that caused her claw to snap and start bleeding. So is it the cold or a vitamin or nutritional issue?

This is a new one on me. I live in central minnesota its gets pretty cold here, about -5 now. I keep a lot of birds through the winter never had cold mess with the claws. Just a few questions for ya:

How old are the birds?
Have you kept guineas in the winter before?
What feed are you giving them?

The guineas are 7 months old. These are our first guineas so we haven't gone through a winter. Feed has been layer mash that they eat with my chickens, supplemented with hay and BOSS and the snacks of millet and whatever the chicken are getting for fruit, veggies etc. Just this last week I changed over to a meat bird formula so they would have an increased protein because it has been so cold.
