I've been finding some broken eggs and I wanted to know how to prevent that. I found one yesterday that had probably rolled down the ram to our chicken coop. The other one was found a day before yesterday and was smashed my chicken Goldie probably steped on it. (She is the oblivious one of my two polish)
Thanks! Silver1Polish

Well acctuly my my problem is that my chickens keep doing things to the eggs. They are not eating it but like doing things to the eggs so don't know how to stop that.

Are your shell thin? How do they compare to store bought eggshells?

If your shells are not strong, what are they fed? What sort of feed, treats, scraps and amounts?

Assuming your shells are good and strong, perhaps it is a setup issue. Or a bird issue. Polish have those Afro feather tops on their heads that might make it hard to see, correct? She might just be stepping on them more regularly! Unable to see the eggs.

Perhaps photos of the hen in question and the places you are finding the crushed eggs will help us help you solve the mystery.

Are they not laying in a well bedded nest?

If they just started laying things can be wacky for awhile.

New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out. Putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nest might help show them where to lay. They may scratch around in the nests for weeks before laying. Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.

I have one hen that at least once a month crushes her own eggs or others by being too rough in the box. Hens can be clumsy and the occasional broken egg in the coop is just part of having chickens.

Also to add I know by a certain time they are all done laying eggs and am prompt to gather them so I don't give the clumsy one a chance to crush them.

I might just trim Goldie's top hot a little. Great fully my 2 other girls are not crushing their own eggs.
Thanks for all your advice!
