I have to be right there when my hens lay or for some reason my hens empty out the beds from the nest boxes then lay ,then try to roll the eggs out.usually they break the eggs in the process.Could anyone tell me something I could do so they wont do this?Oh yes, I have golf balls in the nest boxes.

When I had hay or straw in my nest boxes my birds would kick it out along with the eggs. Now I use spanish moss. Also I have a 6" edge in the front of my boxes. I live in Florida and spanish moss is everywhere I go and pick it off the trees. So far the birds don't bother with it and lay fine in it. I have used pine shaving and they worked pretty well too.
