broken leg

I have a hen that has broken her femur ( sp?). I took her to the vet and he put her leg in a sling. She can't hop around too well and therefore sits in the same spot all day if I let her. Her appetite is decreasing and she is breathing through her mouth as if she were in distress or pain. The vet gave me pain medication "Metacam" but I don't think it is working. Can anyone help me with some tips or advise to help me keep her going and on the way to recovery. I am afraid she is going downhill from here.

..just keeping her movement restricted (this will help to "avoid" the pain I think as it is probably worsened by movement)... if she is panting from stress then you need to give electrolytes... (check with your vet to see about how to give the metacam if it is now in the water...I do not think you should combine medications in the water)
