a while ago I found one of my red golden hens with a broken leg.
I wrapped it up and used a finger splint to secure it. She has been in a small box in the house. the leg was broken just below the knee..... so the fingersplint prevents her from putting her leg down at all so no pressure was ever on the leg.
Anyway it has been about 2 weeks with the splint on and it looks GREAT!

My question is. how long does it take the bone to heal?? I think I should remove the splint and let her try to use it again. I'll keep her in the house to keep an eye on her for a few days but I think shes about ready to go back outside.... at least in a small cage.

I believe five weeks
perhaps you could resplint in a week to a different type (of splint) to allow her to put some pressure/begin to walk on it

One of my pullets broke her leg and I kept a splint on for 6 weeks and fed her lots of calcium(yogurt) She is fine now but it seems a little painful(she picks it up sometimes). At least she walks on it fine. That was about 4 months ago

I placed a splint once on a pheasants leg and kept it in place for six weeks. After six weeks it was healed.
