Good afternoon, I've a Jersey Giant roughly 13 weeks old who has either broke of sprained her left "Elbow". I have her separated from the flock in a separate area of the coop. I had her on the floor, but the dang mice are a menace trying to get at her food, so I placed her in a box to keep them at bay. She is going on 2 weeks of rest. I tried the sling idea and she got out of it. When in the box she had hopped up onto the water jug (see attached pics)so shes trying really hard. Lil stinker still is a spit fire. She continues to eat and drink like normal. She really likes the mash I make. I dust bathe her a bit to keep flies at bay. It has been very hot here so I have an oscillating fan set up near her as well.

Could you describe her symptoms? Can she walk on her bad leg at all? Does she hold her bad leg up? Do her legs overlap when she stands as they do in the pic? Is the hock swollen or reddened? For some reason, I am wondering if she might have a leg bone deformity that has worsened with age. The hock tendon can sometimes rupture in some deformities. Varus valgus deformity, TD (tibial dyschondroplasia) are some of those conditions, and can affect one leg or both. Some refer to these problems as slipped tendon, but usually these are deformities.

I don’t know if that is what is going on with your chicken, or if it is an injury or disease. The more you can describe, the better we can understand.

Peep will hold her leg up then rest it on the floor. She will not stand on it with full weight nor walk on it. She hops using her right leg and extends her wing to counter balance. It is not red. Normally she keeps her feet strait. The hock is swollen, but is reducing in size daily. It is not red. An attempt of straitening her leg was futile. I do not feel any cracking or dislocation. It does not extend like her right leg. She does not fuss if we try to examine it or fiddle with it. This was an injury that suddenly came on. I check on my flock daily for water and feed. This happened about three weeks ago now that I think of it. Does this help?
Thank you for any insight
