Brooder bedding

Anyone ever use sand for bedding in brooder ?
Seems I can remember , parents useing sand and coal oil brooder, heater.

I have read that chicks may fill their crops with sand and therefore not get proper nutrition. We have always used pine bedding with no added aromatics, it's very very cheap at feed supply stores.
