Since I am new to raising my sweet chicks; I've been reading a lot from this site. It quickly became apparent that the dog crate I was using was becoming too small. I researched and found pictures of homemade brooder boxes in this site.Surprisingly, my husband sent me to purchase the needed materials to build me a larger box. My son came over and together my he and my husband created my new box for my girls. It is 2x4 in size with a plywood floor. I added decorative cabinet lining paper for easy clean up. I added a stick for them to climb on, a small wooden seat for them. They have their food opposite the water so they could around them better. I hung a cd , some oregano and thyme hanging in the box and added some gravel. The girls like to peck at the herbs, jumping to reach them. I made them a hanging bead pendent in different colors so they can peck it. I keep the brooder on my back porch so my chicks are safe and out of the elements.
Thanks so much for all the great ideas and information.
