brooder question

I am trying to keep dust down as much as I can cause I want to build a brooder in my mud room. What I was thinking of was using some sorta cloth over the openings except maybe a 2 sq ft on the door. This would be over the hardware cloth. I hear of using furnace filters but wanted something I could staple down and attach to the door easly but at same time breath and let enough heat/moister out that the chicks don't die. Wish we had a brooder spot in forms like there is a coop/run area.

Okay.... that doesn't make tons of sense to me... Are you saying you are going to put the chicks in the mud room, and cover up the doors with cloth to keep out dust? The dust isn't too bad. I raised my first threesome in the living room with pine shavings, and I'll be doing the same if I'm lucky enough to get chicks again.

Putting them in that area should be fine. Does it have a window? I would open it, just for ventilation.

Sorry let me clear it up i'm going to build a brooder in mud room the fabric I want around the openings on brooder. We had 11 chicks in the living room and the dust is every where from them and the pine shavings. So I figure if I put some sorta breathable cloth on brooder openings it will keep the rest of the mud room from getting all the dust or at least cut it down but I don't know if it will breath enough for the chicks to stay healthy. I want to know if anyone has done this or can recommend what type of cloth to use for this or is it unadvisable.

I would be very worried that the chicks would get some sort of respiratory infection. Is it at all possible to put it in the garage?

How about just using washed sand in the brooder instead of shavings?

Or how about some rubber shelf liner? There are holes so it breathes, but I'd imagine it would cut down on SOME of the dust. Sand is still dusty, even washed and they seem to throw it everywhere while bathing in it. Maybe try some cat litter pellets or corn cob bedding? Good luck.
