I've made a homemade brooder which seems to be working well. It's a simple wood box with 1/4 inch hardware cloth in the bottom. I insulated it with foam board with the silver backing. I'm using heat lights as a means of heat. My problem is regulating the heat. At night the temperature drops so the lights need to be full strength. I work during the day so I can't regulate the heat. On a view occasions the heat has spiked and killed a few of my birds. Any suggestions on a homemade thermostat that may help prevent this?

you need to get a soild box to put them in and and put a light at one end and leave the other end open so it will let some of the heat out and the chicks will get as close to the light as they need do not shut it up tight because you will kill them for being to hot.. hope this help if not go to youtube and look at what everyone makes

Sounds like your brooder doesn't allow for the birds to get out of the heat should they need to. My brooder is just a big (about 4x2 for 30 chicks) box with a mesh top. 250watt red bulb on one end. The birds seem to know where to go if they get cold, and move in and out of the heat as they need to.
