I have a 1 1/2 year old hen that hatched a chick on June 12. She hasn't given up the peep yet and they sleep and roam together. She started laying daily about a month ago. Yesterday I noticed she wouldn't get off the nest again. Her poor peep is right by her side. Today we confined her to a dog crate because I have no roosters for fertile eggs. Her peep is standing outside the crate crying and staring inside. It breaks my heart. Is it normal to keep mothering a peep this long and for the Mom to go broody so soon? Ugh.

hello @samsnonna2048 - welcome to BYC :frow
Is the peep being harassed by other flock members? Is it still with mum for protection? Or just because that's the only company it's got at the moment? In any case it will wander off for food and water when necessary, so actually this might be a relatively easy and gentle parting.

It is normal for a hen prone to broodiness to want to brood again in autumn.

Single chick is still 'attached' to mama...not unusual.
Unusual that mama isn't driving chick away by that age(10 weeks old).
Break the broody, the chick will be fine.

No chick is not being harassed. Mom and peep were in their own pen together. We let them out in late afternoon with the other hens. If a hen tries to harass the peep the Mom steps in. Now Mom is broody and is in a time out pen. Peep is by herself, not quite big enough to put in with others. It's the second day of time out for Mom and she still has that glazed look to her eyes and is doing that broody cluck cluck. Hopefully a few more days will break her.
