I have searched all the articles concerning putting first day old hatched babies under a broody hen, and can not find these questions or answers. So here are my questions:
Tonight I put two babies under my broody. She clucked, pecked my husbands hand as he was putting them in. They cheeped maybe twice and all got quiet. So it seems they have been accepted. Here are my questions.

1) My broody hen is in a laying box about 24 inches off of the ground - the box is approximately 10 inches x 15 inches . Should I worry that they might fall out?

2 Since the boxes are up high- how will they get down for water tomorrow morning- or back up to sleep?

3) if I move the hen to a place where she is in a lower box tomorrow will that increase the chances she will reject them?

4) We just stuck the babies right under her- will they suffocate? What actually keeps them from suffocating?

Honestly, chicks can fall from a box without injury. Watch the chicks from a hatchery. They fall from the conveyor belt, and the employees toss them all over the place while sexing.
Once the chicks are hungry, and mom takes them for food, she will need a place to lay on the floor. She will likely pick a place herself.
The chicks will not suffocate because she is not actually laying her body all the way down.

Hum, I will try to move her tomorrow to a better area, so she can be low to the ground.

Well, they made it through the night, so we will see how well this new mom does, This is a hen who constantly stays broody- but has never had chicks.
