broody chicken on an unfertilized egg

Poor Mama. We had a young rooster (6 mo)) and just gave him away to a country farm. My hen went broody the day after he left and has been sitting on her 1 egg for 5 days. I thought there could have been a chance the eh was fertilized. I candled the egg and saw no sign of an embryo. What is the most humane thing to do for the hen? she is the only mature hen we have. The rest are 6 mo. Pullets. I do not want to add more than one chick to the mix. Thoughts? At this point a broody pen just seems cruel.

could you rustle up a fertile egg or two from someone in the area? Then mama can hatch them and be fulfilled as a broody. If you don't want chicks tell the people they can have them back once she has kicked them to the curb.
