I have a young Hen, she is 14 months old. She went broody 6 weeks ago. I kept taking the eggs she had under her, and the others from other chickens. Finally 22 days ago I just let her keep 3. I marked them. Candled at day 18 and one was bad.
She goes off her nest twice a day for sometimes up to 1.5 hours. Today when I let her out of the coop with the other chickens she left her nest. It's day 22 so I looked in. There was an egg that looked smashed, not the normal look of a chick who is hatching. I heard it cheaping. I waited for her to return. She finally did after 70 minutes off the nest. An hour later when I went back to check her baby chick was in front of her dead. She still has one egg under her. I've never had a problem Mom hatching??? Is she crazy or what? What should I do if anything?

Six weeks of brooding-It could be this hen has just given up-or she could be just a bad mom. Did she leave the nest so long at the beginning?-if yes poor mom. If she brooded well for the first three weeks then she probably just gave up. If this is so it is unfortunate that the chicks started to hatch when the hen's cycle was ending.

She is still at this moment sitting on the one egg. Has been straight now for almost 6 hours?
I don't understand why the one egg was almost crushed looking when I seen it. Then the chick hatched out and then was in front of her dead? Is this odd?

Hatching eggs are weakened when the chick makes that first pip mark. All it takes is for the hen to move in the wrong manner and the egg is crushed. I have seen this happen when the hen is disturbed at the wrong time. Why the dead chick is open to speculation. My guess is she is inexperienced or just not mother material.
