Broody hen cracked egg open 2 days before hatching & chick died. WHY??

Hello! I have a broody hen who I just discoverd this afternoon cracked open an egg she was hatching and the chick inside died. It was only 2 days before hatching and was fully formed. Would appreciate some comments as to why this may have happened? This is the first time she has been on eggs before and the first time I have ever attempted to hatch under a broody hen.
Very disappointed...

Any chance she broke it getting on or off the nest, or another hen tried to get into the nest with her?

She is in her own little coop so no other hens are around. She may have possibly broke it on her own accidentally, I guess. I wondered if they sometimes do break the eggs themselves for whatever reason. There was another in the nest that turned out to be a dud and she broke and ate that one. I would like to try again with her some other time but just wanted to make sure she wasn't doing it on purpose for some reason or other.
