Hi, I have a broody hen at the moment and I am considering let her hatch some eggs. I have purchased an old rabbit hutch and prepared it for her. My only concern is we are having a very very cold British spring and will she be warm enough on her own in the hutch. I have looked into heat lamps but the area she will be in mostly is quite small and I worried the heat lamps might be too warm for her. Please could someone give me advice. Many thanks

How cold are you talking? I have had hens successfully hatch eggs even during mid twenty degree nights!

you should have a heat lamp shine on just part of the hutch, so she and eventual chicks can move to the cooler side if too hot. You could place it so it is in a protected area where strong winds & rain wouldn't reach it.

Thanks so much with the night temps dropping to -5C and snow, I was a little worried to remove her from the others and for her to try and stay warm. I think you are right and I will invest in a heat lamp. Take care
