Hello everyone!
New chicken owner here with 2x Australorp hens and 1x Australorp rooster.
Very shortly after getting the chickens, my friend noticed clumps of what appeared to be nits (see photos) on my roosters feathers. We also noticed an exceptionally red bum on the rooster.
I treated the chickens with Pestene Powder over two consecutive nights, and it appears the issues with the nits are gone.
A few days later my friend suggested the chickens may also have an issue with their feet as they were (and still are) quite red and scaly looking.
I'm no expert, but a quick google search showed images that looked very similar to my chicken's feet.
I'm now a bit worried as one of our hens has gone broody a few days ago and she is looking very pale (see photos).
Any suggestions of how to approach this? I'm assuming it's scaly leg mites, which as far as I know isn't treatable with the Pestene Powder.
I want to get broody hen fixed up but don't want to disturb her or the 7 eggs she's sitting on.
Thanks for your help!
-Richard

If possible, cut those clumps of eggs out of the fluff the best you can.

You can apply vaseline to your hen's legs and feet for the SLM, but I would be most concerned about getting the lice/mites under control while she's sitting.

I usually leave broodies to their own devices, but do check boxes when they get off the nest to eat/drink/poop just to be sure there's no bugs in the nesting material. In your case, I definitely would do that. If there's an issue, you want to address it before chicks hatch, the bugs can kill them.

I am new to the whole chicken/broody chicken experience, but would food grade diatomaceous earth help? I use it religiously after every coop clean up. I also sprinkled it in the nesting boxes when my broodies were out and about for daily eat/poop/water.

DE is not going to be effective against SLM nor an active infestation of lice/mites on the body.
If you have a broody that has Lice/Mites and she's sitting on fertile eggs, it's best to dust her with a Permethrin based poultry dust in 7 day intervals to get rid of the bugs. Her box will be infested too, so it would be important to remove bedding and treat the box and replace bedding as well.
