This is my first year with chickens and I was given my first one who I think is now three or four years old, could she be broody? She’s been around chicks again recently and now has been on the nest for three hours, she has her wings down and won’t get up when I nudge my fingers under her like she normally does.

I find that often when I hatch chicks and the others start to see them running around they get broody. It is likely she’s broody, but you should just wait and see. If she’s still sitting there tomorrow and she isn’t egg bound or anything then she is broody.

She looks the trance, but I would like to see her a bit more flat in the nest. I would wait at least 3-5 days, to make sure. Often times, I think they are, set the clutch... oh whoops, off the nest, not going to do it, then two days later sticking like a leech to the nest... and I am out of eggs.
