Two weeks ago, we lost our first chicken, Cindy Lou Who. We have no idea what happened. She was tucked in the coop, then the next morning, she was gone. No carnage, no jimmied locks...she was just gone.

Cindy Lou's best friend was Royal. About 2 days after Cindy disappeared, Royal started acting bizarre, visiting the dirt bath they shared, walking around in a daze...I knew she missed Cindy. Then we couldn't get her to come out of the coop. She'd puff up and almost cry when we opened the coop. Yesterday we had no eggs. It dawned on me that she might be broody. I lifted her, and sure enough, she was on some eggs.

Can grief cause a chicken to go broody?
