We got 6 eggs, she broke one on day 10 and we removed it but it looked like something was growing. On day 16 she pushed one out and it had nothing happening in it. It is day 25 and she is sitting well on them, should I leave her?

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Have you candled the eggs to see if they have developed?

from washington state glad you joined us!
25 days, chances are they didn't develop you could candle one and see if you see any movement. I can place a egg up to my ear and tell if the chick is still alive, but I've been hatching for many years! Hatching eggs can be so frustrating but also so rewarding !

No haven't candled them, is it ok to do that this late on (moving eggs round, disturbing hen)? The fact she kicked out one made me think she knows more than me so I have been leaving her too it and trying not to fuss with the eggs.

Hi from Ner Jersey!!
yeah, usually when a hen kicks out an egg, it means that it isnt any good anymore.
if you really want to test it, try putting an light "x" or mark on the egg or eggs that are kicked out of the nest.
put them back in again, and if she kicks them out the next day, you should throw them away

Have candled them in a not knowing what I am doing way, 2 weren't fertile (lavendar pekins from neighbour with cockerel and 2 hens), discarded them. Other two had 3/4 dark area with 1/4 light area! Put them back under her! They are 'mille fleurs' from rare breed farm! What do you think? If chicks developed then die would she kick the egg out? it has been very rainy and cold so wonder if that has slowed down development or do you think they are nothing?
