I have a pair of Pekin Ducks we've had almost a year. I'm guessing they are about a year and a half old. The female has cranked out almost an egg a day since we got her even through the winter! In the past week she's started staying on the nest for most of the day in what I can only guess is her attempt to hatch them. In my 7 years of raising chickens I've never had a chicken go broody so this is all new to us! My concern is that she gets off the nest a few times a day for 5-30 minutes at a time. I don't watch that closely so it could even be more occurances than that. She spends more time ON the nest than off though. She started with 3 eggs and now it looks like there are 5 in there. I was under the assumption she'd stop laying if she was broody? Is there any chance this is going to go anywhere or should we just take the eggs from her? I'm willing to ride it out just to see what happens but we aren't really holding our breath. This is just all new to us! Any chicks we've ever hatched have always been in the incubator.
