We havent had chickens long. We have 3. One of them has started staying in the nest box longer then usual, the other 2 are in the garden enjoying a peck about. They are 'point of lay pullets', each has been laying an egg a day. We'll have to see if she lays today, as she's in the nest box again this morning, longer than usual. Any ideas or answers please about this behaviour? Thanks.

Welcome to BYC.

If you want to break her from broodiness, keep her away from the nest.

If she is staying on the next overnight and you can keep the other hens out of that nest, get some fertile eggs for her to hatch.

What does she do if you reach in to pull her out? When my Australorp was broody, she would fluff up all her feathers, like a mad cat, growl at me and try to peck me. She would be really mad at the intrusion. If your girl is just hanging out in there a little more, but doesn't get fluffy or mad, she may just be thinking about it instead of well and truly broody. If you want her to go broody, you might try getting some wooden eggs, so there's always eggs for her to sit on and you can still collect the REAL eggs daily.
