My Sumatra hens go broody during the late spring as long as I leave the eggs in their nests. They begin to set when they've got from 9 to 12 eggs in the nest. If I don't replace their eggs with blank eggs, I'll get about 6 to 8 chicks. If I pull the eggs out and keep them in the crawl space under my house which is at a constant 50 degrees and put them under the hens when they go broody, I'll get a 100% hatch rate, but one has to keep the eggs turned every day until you're ready to substitute the hen's eggs with the blank ones. I use egg cartons and store the eggs with the cartons on their sides.
