I believe my bantam Welsummer hen has gone broody. I'm not 100% sure because I understand that it's rare for this breed to go broody. But she is just sitting in her nesting box, on top of two eggs and a golf ball, she is sleeping in the nesting box, and will not get up to eat or drink! What should I do?!? I appreciate your responses. Thanks!

It sounds like she has gone broody. When hens go broody they do not eat and drink much. Some of my hens went 3 days without! Then they'll get up, drink water, eat, take a dust bath, chase the other hens around a bit and go back to the nest.

Thanks for the reply! Should I do anything different or special for her now that she is broody?

You could separate her so the rest of the flock don't bother her or try and lay in her nest. And apart from that just make sure she has fresh water and food available when she gets up. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I just moved her into a new coop. She isn't sitting on her eggs, did I break the broody?

Give her a little time to adjust. If she doesn't settle could you possible separate her in her original coop?

She was probably off her eggs for 10-20 minuets, but it was 93 degrees out side, so hopefully that was enough to keep the eggs warm. She seems fine now, I guess she just need time to adjust to her new environment!

My broodies get off the eggs for long periods sometimes and their eggs are fine, even in winter. It takes a while for the eggs to cool down. I hope you get some chicks! Keep us posted!
