Sorry if this us a dumb question lol..I have a bantam black orp who likes to sit on the eggs lately and I've caught her just sitting there in the nest box when I go out to lock the coop in the evening. When I take the eggs she does get up and go but I'm wondering if she could be broody? I dont have a rooster, and just 4 hens. I had production reds before this for 3 years and they never did that. Are some breeds more likely to behave this way? The other 3 dont do it either and they are all different breeds (2 EE and a svart hona)

Yup. Orps are notorious brooders! She May be practicing seeing as she'll willingly get up, but yes most likely shes got those momma hormones kicking in :) though I currently have a failure of a broody Orp who cannot commit to sitting, so I refuse to let her hatch

If I keep taking the eggs away will she snap out of it? Or is this something I have no control over?

She may, but if shes a real to her breed...no. Ive only had one buff orp in 10+ years who'd 'Snap out of it' aka my current girl lemon. But most are more on the side of 'imma sit here and hatch these eggs if I have to starve to do it!' Literally had to let a hen hatch as she refused to eat and plucked every feather from breast bone to butt for her nest. And sat/hallucinated she had chicks for two months luckily post her first brood she seemed much more confident bout not brooding, guess she was making sure she could do it at all

I'll have to keep an eye on my girl then..no chance of hatching eggs around here! If she cant get over it I will rehome her so she can be a happy little mama. Shes a cutie!

If you think you may have a few breeds you want you can pick up some babies at a feed store post her sitting for at least a week straight and stick them under her at night, and she should totally believe she hatched them come morning makes raising babies easier for everyone involved

That's a great idea! I wish I could have more but I'm only allowed six where I live.

Oof yeah we had chickens before city limits were put into place and had nine by the time Seattle was like 6! Luckily we had a big yard and wonderfully niebors so no one ever cared. Now we live out of city limits in a farming region and have 50 or so lol
