buff Ameraucana with BBS

ahappychick- "Well for now to keep the girls company I will put him with them. I will do a test hatch I guess and see, and replace him as soon as I can with a BBS"

Just please be sure and mention to anyone who may buy these eggs or chicks that while they are true Ameraucanas they are offspring from crossed color Varieties and wont breed true. They will no doubt produce some awesome looking EE's but genetic makeup will be mixed. It will be far easier and more cost effective to buy a Roo from Jean than to keep selecting back for proper BBS coloring. Even the visuals could carry Buff genes and crop up down the road.

Ok, he got his start in buffs from me about 2-3 years ago. He probably did a cross on buffs and blue wheatens to get the good egg color.

Do you have a picture of your buff cockerel? Maybe I will trade you a black cockerel for him.

Are you NPIP? If not can you get him P/T tested?

I agree with Jean.

Plumage genetics are the same for all domestic chickens. To cross buff into black based birds would, probably, cause a lot plumage colour difficulties for both varieties with nothing to gain regarding plumage colour.

Also better to keep lavender separate from blue.

I always post pics of my parent birds so I would always tell people that my Ameracauna eggs were from the buff roo over whatever if I was to sell them.

I will take a new pic of him in a moment for you to see

I would love to trade for a black. I am not tested but several months ago I had PC take in several of my birds (ducks, chickens, and quail) for testing with the state of Conn including 2 that lived with this particular roo. They were tested for everything and the only thing that showed up in only one bird was Mareks (which I knew I had since an issue last year) but I vaccinated this and all my chicks ever since and this one was vaccinated at a day old. I can not get NIP tested as chickens are illegal where I live, but I do have my Game bird license for my quail and ducks. When I move to a farm I will get my NIP.

pips&peeps :

Do not cross the buff line into the bbs line. The buffs still need lots (tons) of work on egg color and you will more than likely end up with a huge mess! But mostly you will destroy the progress that has been made on the egg color in your current gals.

I have a bunch of really nice black cockerels this year. I am waiting for their tails to grow in to decide which ones to keep. But they should be available soon.

I would like to see want the Ameraucana police say too, I have a lavender Ameraucana roo I want to put in with B/B/S

You can breed your lavender to black and get black split chicks. (carrying the lavender gene)

Keep these birds seperate from the BBS flock. Toe punch them and you can develop some lavender babies when the new gals start laying. I personally would not keep any of the cockerels.

The lavender line, again, does not have as good of egg color and you will ruin the progress so many people have worked on to get that good egg color on the BBS.

I agree with pips

( Don't put him in, it will take 2 months for the hens to get rid of his "essence")

If you can get a nice black cockerel that is closer to you that is what you should do.
