A friend of mine gave me 3 buff brahma roo's and an "it". He/she is about 4 1/2 months old now, and has a roo in the pen the same age (he's all roo for sure!) But this one looks a lot like a hen. But i'm still not sure. The actions seem very hen like, and "it" is very submissive to the roo (Ducky). Any takers on a guess?
At this point I'm waiting for "it" to either crow or lay an egg for the determination.

I think it is a girl and I don't think it is pure Brahma. That comb looks more like a single comb (though I wouldn't say it is truely a single comb) than a pea comb. Are they hatchery stock?

Thank you for your input! They're all supposed to be pure brahma's. She hatched them from eggs from someone who had pure brahma's. Here are some pics of the big boys who are close to 9-10 months old.

The "big boys" have rose combs but that "it" does not. I know in Wyandottes (which should have a rose comb), single combs pop up every now and again but I have not heard of that happening in Brahmas. I still vote girl for your "it"

Looking at the big boys, I still have to ask if they are hatchery stock? If so that could explain the single comb on your girl.

Well at least the general consinses is that she is a girl which is what I was really hoping for, but I'm a little disappointed that they don't look like pure brahma's.

Well they could be "pure bred" but from a hatchery. Hatcheries don't really worry about a breed's SOP just selling lots of chicks. If you want really good Brahmas you have to go to a breeder. If you are happy with the ones that you have then keep them. If they are still really nice tempered birds that lay nice eggs who cares if they are hatchery stock? They are still pretty looking birds.

I just got into keeping Brahmas myself. Love the way they look and I have heard that they are good layers of nice sized eggs.

I do enjoy my brahma's and I have 25 light brahma's coming from the hatchery (mcmurray) in about 4 days. The ones I currently have are super sweet, friendly, and very personable. Since of the 4 I have 3 are roo's and my it seems to be a she, I haven't got any eggs yet. Someone told me they take until they are 8 months old to lay??? Does that sound right? My other pullets are 5 1/2 months old and at least one of them has started laying, and i figure the rest will soon follow after.

Hatchery stock usually will start laying at a younger age. Brahmas are a large dual purpose breed so I wouldn't be surprised if they take longer to get to POL. I just can't wait until I can see my chicks feathered out. They are such pretty birds.
