I recently purchased 4 Buff's and 3 of them are the standard color, but one of them has a darker buff color to it. Still buff but not as light. This certain one also has a couple feathers maybe 3-4 in its tail that have a black mixed in them. I purchase all of my chicks from a reputable breed, that treats me well. Is it possible one of the breeders other breeds snuck a good time in on one of the buffs. Just wondering, or is it ok for a buff to have a very small amount of black in the tail. Looks almost like a RIR roo snuck in the buff pin or something.

The one on the right is the one in question.

If youlook closely at the tail you can see the black.

Dont have any right now. Tonight I will update with a picture. Sorry, I really just wanted to know if that is ok by breed standard or not.

There are variations in buff color. The darker one has a little too much black in her tail for breeding, but matched up to the right rooster could produce some excellent babies. So you just never know until you test them.

My buffs vary greatly in color. The lightest one has a bit of grey at the ends of her tail feathers- like she's getting moldy or something. But- she's the only one that went broody- so she's a keeper. The dark one looks like some chicks I had that were BO x RIR. Pretty ginger color- wouldn't worry about it.

Hey I'm not complaining if miss thang puts me some more eggs in the box. LOL Just curious, but thank you for your input

I have been told that is not a bad trait to have. The color that bird will throw should be well within the standard. I have hatched out Buff chicks that had Darker feathering on the top of their heads. And it is how the bird finishes that is important. And they too came from very reputable breeder.
