Why? Why must chicken math be an actual real life thing? Why did we ever think that we would have “just three or four chickens”? Silly us of the past, didn’t you know that chickens were addicting? Oh well. We’re at 6 now and unfortunately the coop and run is looking a bit small. 18ish square foot coop and 40 square foot run, subtract about 3 square feet for the food and water and we are looking at about 55 square feet for 6 chickens to share?! Enter action plan: create large fenced in area for them. It was my job to do it since my dad was busy and my mom and brother wouldn’t be much help. So I found some pieces of scrap wood, the remaining hardware cloth, U-shaped nails and a hammer. And then I got to work and miraculously somehow managed to create a fence thingy! But it didn’t stand up on its own, so then I had to nail it to stumps... Long story short, they now have an additional 110 square foot area to run around in during the day! Because the actual coop is only 18 square feet, and there are 6 of them for now, we are going to fully cover their run so they have that extra space in winter.
So here’s a warning: chicken math is real and make sure you have enough materials to build a fence!
Here is their coop and run:
The fence that they can fly over, but don’t:
Them enjoying their new pen!
