Just wanted to post a pic of the progress so far on the "kickin" house (my 3 yr old calls it that lol) my husband is building. He is using mostly wood we sawmilled from our property almost 2 yrs ago and posts we already had. The only thing we have bought so far is the nails. When all is said and done we will only be paying for nails, shingles, paint, vinyl for the floor and the fencing for the run.
I am very proud of how well he has done so far. It is 8ft x 8ft and we made the chicken door 12 in wide by 18 in high. I hope that is ok. We also will have a regular door in the back and the side where the nests will be will have fold down doors. We are putting vents in but he asked do we need a window. Do we need a window lol?

If so I guess we could put it in the front above the chicken door. It is right in our backyard. the pic was taken looking out the back door and behind that is the horse pasture where I am sure they will love to hang out sometimes.

The run when we finish it will be 20 ft wide by about 30 feet long. We are leaving room for more chickens because we have really heard a lot about this chicken math

Thanks guys! I am excited about it. Do you think the size of the door and the coop itself is a good size. I know the run will be plenty big enough.

I think you are off to a terrific start. Not sure which door you are asking about but my chicken door for standard Buff Orpingtons is 12x14. Hopefully that will be big enough. I made it so one whole side opens up for cleaning. Beautiful land behind your coop. I am sure your chickens will love getting into the pasture to free range. Good luck with the rest of your coop and your chickens.

I would just make sure that it's big enough for you to be able to get in when you need to. If you make it so you can access your nests from the outside you probably won't have to go in as much. But you still need to have that option.

Looks great! Wish my wife would let me build something like that!

Yeah, i was talking about the door the chickens actually use, it is 12 x18 inches. I think it should be ok. There is going to be a big door in the back and we will have pull down doors for the nest areas too. I think they will enjoy the pasture too. I guess horse poop is ok for them lol. They are still little right now but the bigger ones are really getting cramped in the brooder and I can't wait for them to have more room. The land is beautiful here and we are very lucky to have it. Our next step will be a milk cow but we are starting small lol.
