Fifteen minutes ago I came across a three foot long bull snake stretched along the base of my outdoor double chicken coop, that provides as a home for my 9 coturnix quail. I "accidently" came across it, it instantly lifted its head and upper body of the ground, and started to rattle its tail at me imitating a rattler. I sprayed it with the horse because ti was the closest thing in reach!! it slithered away quickly. I am a total snake lover but dont enjoy them threatening the lives of my precious poultry!! Does anyone know a way to snake proof my duck pen, quail hutch, and two chicken pens. I had a bad experience with a young bull snake a few years ago who came in and killed a chick every day. I had chickens out loose when I came across it too!!!!!!!!! Both my young chickens (1 and a half months old) and my older hens and rooster (1-7 years old). I cannot lose my precious poultry as they are my whole world. This hasnt been a huge problem before but I feel that this late summer and moisture everywhere is going to bring a very snakey summer. How can I snake proof my pens?? Two pens are dog panel fencing, one is multiple kinds of fencing and wire and one is chicken wire. How can I prevent the snakes?
