Ok I think it's one of my wynadottes. She lays a wonderful dark brown egg, and as my 3 wynadottes have gotten older the eggs have gone from rather modest in size to some real whoppers. I sell them to a nice lady at work and she's commented on how healthy the yokes are, and how wonderful the color of the egg shells are. She loves the variety, because some shells are green, some pink, some brown and occasionally one is white (one white leghorn).

Now back to where I started... I think it's a wynadotte because it's always a brown egg, but THE SUCKERS ARE HARD TO CRACK! And once you crack they're hard to come apart. I have to jam my thumb in them and then they explode all over like they're pressurized!

The insides of that hen must be miraculous indeed!

2 weeks ago, I started getting eggs from my RIRs and those shells are also really hard. We have to give them a good wack on a sharp edge to even get a crack in them. And like you said, then you have trouble pulling them apart. I've found the best way of getting them open is to to to crack the shell around the middle, rather than just one crack.

But they do taste great once you get them out the shell.

All of my hens lay eggs like that.....in the summer when nutrients are their richest. I crack the egg and then use a pointed knife to poke/break the membrane. Once it is broke they separate much easier.

The name of this post made me laugh.

I get 1 egg almost weekly that will crack if you put the slightest pressure on it. I tried to rub some dirt off one and it broke. They have layer feed but I guess I may have to get some oyster shell.

same here! mine have oyster shell and get yogurt treats. it's not the shell so much as the membrane that gets me. sorry for typing, had hand surgery again and doing caps properly is just a pain.
