Hey guys!
Question about when you bandage up your chickens bumblefoot

It’s hot here in Kentucky, so I’ve got my Heat Stress Prevention protocol in action, which is a combo of things: Fans, Frozen 2-liter soda bottles, Shallow pans w/water for Standing in, Frozen snacks…

Should I remove those Shallow water pans to prevent the “Bumblefoot ladies” (I have 2 of them) from using that cooling-off option?

Even with using a waterproof hydrocolloid dressing & vet tape; I’m sure it would get too soaked.
— Does everyone agree?
— Ideas?

I really do hate to take them away, as all the others will be upset to see them go. It’s everyone’s favorite way to cool-off. But, they will still have a running box fan and some frozen soda water bottles to lay up against if need be. - And, of course some frozen snacks!!

Sounds like a good idea. Make sure your birds have plenty of nice, cool shade.

No, I would not let them in pans of water with the dressings on.

Are the feet healed? Keep them dry.

Is it not an option to separate the bumblefoot ladies during their recovery so that they're the only ones without access?
I mean, I could keep them penned up and not allow them to free range with the others, but knowing me, my guilt over that would haunt me. I’ve heard it could take weeks or even months for bumblefoot to completely heal up.

You dont need pans of water for your birds to stand in. The fans and frozen soda bottles are good enough.
If they have dug holes in the pens, after they go to roost inside the coop for the evening, you can fill the holes with water.
Then when you let your birds out the next morning the water in the holes will have been absorbed into the soil providing a nice cool place for your birds to lay in during the heat of the day.
You dont want birds recovering from bumblefoot surgery/treatment soaking their feet in nasty water carrying whatever bacteria it contains.

I can relate with hot temps and high humidity.

I love this idea, very informative! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond…
— They do have a couple of “dug-outs” already in their shady spots; they should work out great! 👍🏼
