I have a hen who had a small bumble on her foot. I treated it and wrapped with PRID until it was healed. She has no more scab or even noticeable spot where it was. She is however limping. When comparing her foot pads the one with the bumble is markedly swollen. It does seem to be firmer than the other footpad. It is NOT warm/hot however. She is completely normal in every other aspect. Is this normal when a bumble is finishing healing??

Hi sorry about her foot. When you treated her the first time, were you able to remove any pus after removing the scab? It sounds like some of the infection may have been retained. Do you think you could post pictures of her feet? Before and after pics could be helpful too if you have any.

I soaked it and kept removing the thin scab and there was never any pus no matter how I squeezed it. I don't have any pictures of her foot from before as it was responding to treatment very well. This could be something else altogether, just investigating if it could be from the previous sore. It has been a couple of weeks since she has gotten over this, but can't think of anything else she could have done to cause the limp. Unless, of course I have another girl with a sprain. ugh

Hmm there is always a possibility she has something else going on. Pictures of her foot will be helpful. Is her other foot okay in comparison?

Sorry it took so long, here are the pics of my girl's feet. I got both for comparison. She is still limping though not as severe as she started out doing. Her right foot is the problem and is noticeably swollen. It does not feel any warmer than her left, normal foot. The pink color to her right foot is from my cleaning it with Hibiclens after a warm Epsom salts soaking. I went ahead and applied some antibac ointment and wrapped her foot to keep it clean. She is still acting completely normal, alert and social otherwise. None of her flock mates are picking on her.

I have some Doxycycline 250mg antibiotic for fish. Should I give her some of that? If so, how much? For those who have given their flock amoxicillin, is it the same from the vet as a doctor for people dosage and form-wise?

So do you feel any residual pus in her foot? Did the swelling go down at all?

Any hidden entry points that could’ve been overlooked? Make sure to check all the little crevices really thoroughly. I can’t exactly tell from the picture but is it swollen a bit right above her foot at her little ankle area?

I know you said her right foot pad is pink from cleaning, but there isn’t a little cut is there?

Sorry, so many questions. Just trying to help see what would cause that swelling. From what you’re saying it seems like you were able to treat the bumblefoot effectively and then her foot just swelled up. So what I’m thinking is she either has got to have another one somewhere or some of the infection got left in there. What do you think?

I’ve given amoxicillin and I only had the aquamox in 500mg capsules, so I gave one per day for 7-10 days. But it’s preferable to give 250mg twice per day for 7-10 days. (<— for about a 5 lb chicken your dose is approx. 250mg twice per day)

My hen did fine taking the 500mg dose once per day, but I learned that if I had wanted to break open the 500mg capsules and pour and mix the powder into something like 1 tsp of coconut oil, I could do that then divide the mixture in half. I could then form little pill shaped pellets and freeze them and feed them to my hen at 250mg twice per day that way instead of the 500mg one per day.

People amoxicillin would absolutely be the same thing formula wise, dose wise I can’t answer. I just know for chickens it’s about 250mg twice per day for about a 5 lb hen. Here’s a good thread with smart people on it talking about amoxicillin dosage if you want to look into it more, page 4:
