One of our ladies has bumblefoot. She started limping really bad using her wings to balance off her left foot. We soaked her last night and this morning and peeled off the scab. There was no kernel, just a big hole full of white stringy pus. I assume we caught it early since it was still in this stage and not a hard core?

We squeezed what we could out, flushed it with iodine, and applied Neosporin. Wrapped it up and she is recuperating in a dog kennel inside.

Should we continue with soaking her and reapplying bandages/Neosporin or just keep changing the bandages and Neosporin? She really likes to soak in the sink because she somewhat floats and gets pressure off her left foot.

Thanks for any opinions!

A day or two after you've treated this, I'd do another soak just to see if there's any further infection in there. I'd be skeptical that I got it all and saw no kernel in there.

If it appears it's still got some infection coming out, you could try putting PRID (drawing creme) on it and see if that pulls more out.

If after a couple of days you see nothing else as far as infection, then I'd rest and say you got it all. She should be feeling way better in that case and able to walk on it without limping. I'd still keep her still though for a few days so it closes up and you can let her out without a bandage on it.

We definitely got past the scab. I could put the tweezers in at least 1/2 in deep and she bled a decent amount. I probed around but didn't feel anything hard along with squeezing.

This is our first case on 4 years so just trying to learn.

Thanks for the reply!

Your welcome! Not sure how to get the kernal out though so, hopefully I can help her!

This came on sudden. I went to the store and got PRID and we applied that last night after her soak. We couldn't do it more because of her quality of life. I think it needs to be opened up this morning. It was just a giant cavity with stringy pus. Probing around just caused some mild bleeding. Hopefully with the wound open it will allow gravity to do it's thing. I did read not all bumblefoot has kernels so maybe this is one of those cases.

I've read sometimes there isn't a kernel. I'm going to wait and see how the inflammation goes. If it gets better I'm going to let it heal. Our girl did good during the operation but I don't really want to do it again and be to traumatic.

Again our first time so can just go on the knowledge available

I thought I had the scab off but I kept tweezing and got through. It's pretty tough skin. Once you get past it, you will know, especially if it's swollen pretty bad. It was just a giant hole/cavity. I was hesitant to keep going at first but I'm glad I did.

It was kind of like an infected nail on a human. The more I tweezed I see more and more white pus and eventually opened the whole thing up and squeezed a good bit out. If yours has a kernel then you should be able to coax it out but the scab is thicker than it appears.

Good luck!

So keep picking through the hard skin?
