Hi,

One of my hens has started to lay eggs with weird bumps on them. The bumps always seem to be on the pointed end of the egg. My other 2 hens lay perfectly smooth eggs and they eat the same feed. I've looked up the bumpy egg thing and it seems to be either too much calcium or too much vitamin D. How can one hen have such a problem while the others don't? What can I do about it? I like sharing my eggs and hers are the prettiest color blue.

Also, I seem to be having a mite problem. Could there be any correlation???

Thanks,
Martha

I looked at the egg guide and saw the calcium description. Can't figure out why one hen has such a problem while the other eggs are fine. Any thoughts? They eat the exact same food.

Just like humans, chickens don't all process nutrients in the exact same way. Some may have more of a need for calcium based on their absorption of it than others. Even though hens are said to be real good at regulating their calcium intake, one may take a bit more than she actually needs.

I get eggs like that from the store occasionally. I always thought it was just one of those things that happens.
I guess if it's your own flock you do worry if there's something wrong or that you could do to improve it. I'm glad we have BYC !!!
