I am very new to chicken keeping. I have a sick girl I brought in the house this past Friday. Initially, I thought she was egg bound, but after bringing her inside and giving her a warm bath and feeling in her vent, she is not. My next guess was she was in shock since a raccoon got in the the coop last Wednesday night and killed two of my chickens. I am treating her with corid for coccidiosis. I really am at a loss of what to do.

My father-in-law is 76 and is in the hospital. He perks up when you talk to him about chickens. He asked me today if I had burped that chicken yet. I told him I had not, and didn't know how to burp a chicken. His response was, "Just like a baby, and I should know better"

Is this crazy talk, or is he onto something? He did grow up around livestock.

Chickens do burp and fart, but not quite the same as humans. "Burping" is simply releasing gas from the stomach through the mouth, and "farting" is releasing gas from the rectal sphincter.
Chickens metabolism is far different from ours, so there is very little *gas". There is however some air that certain breeds will swallow on occasion. That air must go somewhere. It is expelled from the croop in a short gurgle or gasp usually when yawning.
Air that may get trapped and passed on through is released through the vent when releasing waste. Ever notice bubbles in the cecal poo, or in wet poo? Yup, that is a chicken "fart".
