Button question

Okay, I have a heat lamp so I'll do that.

Yes I have one male, one female. Sometimes they snuggle together and sleep and
sometimes they seem to be ignoring each other. Will I see them mate? Is it obvious?

Thanks for answering all my newbie questions

They shouldn't need a heat lamp. A few people in climates with below freezing weather keep theirs outside and still get a few eggs. Egg production is nearly all sunlight. Unless they are very cold to the point it's stressing their bodies and they need all the energy they have to produce heat then cold by itself will not lower egg production. They will sleep cuddled together even if it's 80F in the house.

Buttons need lots of light. Something like 14-16hrs and just through a window may not be enough. Especially cloudy days. I put lights over mine. It also helps keep them from banging their heads. None of mine will boink if I have a light over them but as soon as the light goes off I have to be careful moving around the room or they will spook into the lid. So I put fluorescent strips over all of them with a daylight spectrum bulb set to about 14hrs. You can get cheap strips either for starting plants inside or under cabinet lighting if you want really small ones then they sell full spectrum or day light bulbs for plants and fish tanks.

You may want to explain that gray theory of yours to my buttons because they stopped laying when their room was only 60. And they should never be keep outside in freezing weather.

When they mate it is obvious LOL I see mine mate all the time. They are like chickens and do not need to mate to lay eggs. On the thread button mutations there is a link to to one of the best sites for button quail information. I would get my information from there are button quail heaven there tends to be a lot of conflict in the information on the web. Have you posted pictures of your buttons I would love to see them. Also you have checked to make sure you don't have two boys. The nest way to do that is the vent feathers boys have red to pink vent feathers. Unless they are white or splash
