Of the two mentioned - Chicks.

My personal preference - Hatching eggs

Getting adult birds means you cut back on feed, time, etc but it also means there's a good chance they will be skittish, fearful, aggressive, carrying diseases or lice, or are someone's culls (don't lay well, too old, aren't what you want, etc)

Itdepends on what you want. I wanted to have eggs right away so getting hens already laying was my answer. I'll be getting CHicks in january.

This time of year, I would get hens.
It is nice to raise them from babies, but you'll want more by spring, and you can get chicks then.

Chicks all the way, for the reasons everyone else mentioned. Though if it were the case of a Silkie and I really wanted a pullet, I might get a young one, not a full grown adult, but not a chick either.

I've bought hens, point-of-lay pullets, and chicks. really it depends on how long you want to wait for eggs.
