Buying an incubator

:welcome :frow I have hatched out hundreds of chicks over the years. I started out with a Little Giant circulated air incubator with a turner that I borrowed. My first hatch wasn't that great hatch, a little over half of the eggs I put in hatched. I kept at it watching my temperature and humidity. I figured out I was running my humidity too high. I backed off on it and had better hatches.

It really depends of what you want to hatch. The styrofoam incubators are fine. If you can successfully hatch in one of those you can hatch in about anything. I have never hatched out emu eggs but a friend of mine has emu's and hatches their eggs but he does have a cabinet. I would only invest in a cabinet incubator if you are going to hatch a lot of chicks. The Hova-Bators are deeper than the Little Giants. There are other manufactures with very similar incubators. Now I use my cabinet to incubate in and my styrofoams incubators as hatchers. You can even make one out of a cooler, old fridge, etc. I made one out of a styrofoam cooler and it works great. I bought my cabinet incubator many years ago. It originally had a wafer thermostat. I eventually changed it over to an electronic thermostat and used the wafer thermostat in the stryofoam incubator/hatcher I made. It works great. Emu eggs are MUCH MUCH bigger than chicken eggs. I believe time to hatch is from 50-55 days.
