1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. And is there a story behind your member name?
Hi, I’m Ryan! I live on a little 21 acre farm in East Tennessee. Not much goes on out here, but I keep myself busy with photography, art, baking, poultry, gardening, and many other hobbies among those mentioned.
I picked up photography more recently, and I spend a rather large quantity of my time practicing it. Birds are some of my main subjects, however I have a collection of portraits on my camera roll too- which by the way I’ve filled with just over 15,000 images since this time last year!
I have a tendency to use the same subjects for painting and drawing that I do for photography, and aim for (as best I can ) a realistic style of art.
Baking and eating are of course two other favorite hobbies of mine! I’m a sugar fanatic who doesn’t exactly know how to frost a cake…but I don’t mind what it looks like. As long as It tastes good I’m satisfied. If there are any recipes you think I may like I’d love for you to send them to me! I’m especially fond of all things chocolate.
These are examples of my photography. I’m certainly not the greatest at it, but I’m learning.

2. Why and when did you start keeping chickens? (or any other poultry you have)
I started keeping chickens and ducks back in 2017, When I had just moved out of a busy neighborhood and had been living on my farm for maybe three or four months. I don’t suppose there was any specific reason as to why decided to raise poultry. I think largely it was my excitement after hearing stories from backyard chicken keepers online that inspired me to order some of my own. I did my research and decided to start with four Speckled Sussex… and somehow I wound up getting a couple of ducks too

3. Which aspects of poultry keeping do you enjoy the most?
Oh there’s so much of it that I enjoy! Though I think it’s the companionship they offer that really stands out the most. Chickens- and ducks- each have such unique and adorable personalities that I really love to see.
4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?
Joy is a favorite of mine, a four year old SS and the only one left from my original flock. She’s quite unique and very social. I often compare her to a dog because she loves people… and food!
A little over a year ago she battled a severe case of EYP. She made a full recovery after several stressful weeks.
5. What was the funniest poultry related thing that has happened to you in your years as an owner?
Joy as I mentioned is a bit of a character. She’s found herself in several sticky situations over the years. She’s gotten herself stuck in a car, and is always taking my lunch right out of my hands! One particular day she decided she was going to try and fly over the pool. In consequence she found herself in the water rather than the other side! This of course begs the question, Why did the chicken cross the pool?
6. Beside poultry, what other pets do you keep?
I love having animals around and I’m always adding more! As of now I have my seven chickens, four ducks, three cats, three dogs and a horse. I’m making plans for quail and maybe something else in the near future.
7. Anything you'd like to add?
I haven’t much more to say about myself, but I would like to end this by expressing how grateful I am to all of those who have made BYC such a wonderful place to learn and grow as a poultry owner. I don’t know where I would be without the opportunity to learn from all of you!
