@PioneerChicks

Come say hello to @PioneerChicks who comes to us from Idaho and has been a member since September 2019.

1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. And is there a story behind your member name?
Chickens are basically a part of me, but I love other aspects of homesteading too. Gardening, meat rabbits, yeast baking, and more!

So there you have it. A pioneer life smashed with my chickies. Pioneerchicks.

Besides chickens, I love learning! Though I'm still developing my love of math 😋
Reading and discussing classics is my passion! If you have a favorite that I haven't read yet then I'll add it to my list!

2. Why and when did you start keeping poultry?
I've kept chickens for over a decade. When I was eight or so my parents got a new flock and told me they were my responsibility. I've been the chicken girl ever since!

3. Which aspects of poultry keeping do you enjoy the most?
Chickens never fail to brighten my day. I love watching them interact, and talking aloud to them is a wonderful emotional release!

I also love breeding chickens, both to preserve heritage breeds (ah, my dear Hollands!) and to watch the miracle of new life. Few things are as rewarding as holding a fresh hatchling or watching a mother hen!

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?
Well, I always love the nice roosters. They're always "my boys," even while I'm eating them in a chicken pot pie.

Besides my boys, I love a hen with a quirky personality. My little Miri (Miracle) may have been my top favorite. In my current flock, that girl is Portia.

5. What was the funniest poultry related thing that has happened to you in your years as an owner?
A few years ago I got a pair of Old English Game bantams named Finn and Enna.

Finn was a 6-inch-tall demon! My dad always teased me by threatening to cook him, but I insisted on keeping him. I suffered through dad's jests for over a year.

One day I found Finn picking on an elderly hen, and that was the last straw. I caught that little rooster, threw him in a crate, and stormed into the house.

"Dad! You can finally cook Finn! Do it now!"

He stared at me, then turned away. "Hmm, not enough meat on him."
🤨😂

6. Beside poultry, what other pets do you keep?
My family has an "outdoor dog who comes inside a lot," a few friendly outdoor cats, and both pet and meat rabbits.

In the past we've kept bees and a pair of pigeons, both of which I would love to have again!

Oh, and houseplants! And a jar of yeast too!

7. Anything you'd like to add?
I love the BYC community! Interacting with fellow enthusiasts and helping newbies makes me feel alive.

I haven't been around much in the past couple years, but that's changing this year! I'm excited to rejoin the community! See you guys around!

Nice to meet you @PioneerChicks . I agree that chickens are the best therapy. I admire anyone that understands where their food comes from, and can make those decisions as necessary. They can be pets, but also they can provide. Big repect. Your birds are gorgeous. Welcome back to BYC. :)
