1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. And is there a story behind your member name?
Hi there! My name is Bobbie Jo! I live in rural southern Michigan with my high school sweetheart and our two girls, ages 3 and 7.
We currently live right in town but are working towards being able to buy some land and start our own little homestead.
I work as a special education paraprofessional at a local elementary school and I am currently working on getting my teaching certificate!
As far as my member name, my last name is actually Coop
2. Why and when did you start keeping poultry?
We started keeping poultry about a year ago. My husband wanted to move towards a more self sufficient lifestyle and chickens seemed to be an easy first step.
3. Which aspects of poultry keeping do you enjoy the most?
My favorite thing about keeping poultry is sitting outside watching my hens. I also love watching my girls with them. My oldest absolutely adores our one hen Dorothy and will carry her around like a baby doll. The eggs are an added bonus!
4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?
Well, we have a pretty small flock with only 4 hens and 1 chick, but anyone who knows about my flock knows that our cross beak Dorothy is pretty special to us; because of her cross beak she has always required more time and attention. Spending all of that extra time with her created a strong bond between her and I. She follows me around anytime I am outside, she tries to come in the house if the door is open, and perches on my shoulder often. She is such a sweet girl.
5. What was the funniest poultry related thing that has happened to you in your years as an owner?
Actually, the funniest poultry related thing that has happened, just happened the other day. Our family started walking down the sidewalk to take a walk around the block, I look down beside me and Dorothy was just following along. She walked right beside us the whole way!
6. Beside poultry, what other pets do you keep?
We have a dog named Zelda and a cat named Poochin!
7. Anything you'd like to add?
BYC has been such an amazing resource for me and has been my version of “social media” as I do not have any of the more popular social media accounts.
It is such a wonderful community!
A little bit of a fun fact:
Our hens are named Dorothy, Blanche, Sophia, Rose, and our new chick is Sicily!
