So, yesterday after work I noticed one of the girls acted a bit off. Standing there with her head down, wings drooping and feathers fluffed and tail tucked. So I took her inside thinking maybe the heat but noticed she seemed to be straining. She did like the air conditioner, sat right in front of it. Well I quickly checked the posts here, determined she was egg bound, and researched what to do about it.
I put her in a roasting pan (luckily she didn't catch on) full of warm water and epson salts and let her soak for 15 minutes. She seemed to like it and squatted down in it. I did this in the A/C because it was 90 out. So after her soak I took her out and liberally applied vaseline in and around her vent. I could feel the egg and worked it around a bit but was to afraid to do much with it as I didn't want it to break inside her.
So nothing happened. I set her on the floor and watched her and still nothing. So finally I decide to call the vet. So I go into the other room, make the call, and return to find.... you guessed it, an egg. It did have a split in it which must have happened when it popped out. It was a doulble yolker. So I checked her and she seemed fine, started eating again but was tired so I let her sleep inside in the A/C and this morning she was raring to go. I am sure I am going to have problems with her as she lays doulble yolkers almost every day and last week she laid a triple yolker! I took pics of it and will post them when I get around to it. I am going to try to take her out of lay by reducing her light to see if it gets her to stop double yolking.
So anyhow, this is a perfect example of all the good people here having a lot to do with helping me save my hen. Keep all that good info coming and thank you!
