Has anyone out there ordered this? There statement says: "No Choice of breed and these are all cockerels of Heavy Breed Chicks. Five free Exotic chicks or 3 free ducks with every 100!"

What exactly is a "Heavy Breed Chick"? Seems like a steal for $60 for 100 birds. And that cost is with shipping? Just wondering time that would have to be put in to get them to weight.

I have strongly considered getting that package as well. Sounds like a great deal. I was thinking that if I did it I might butcher some of them as really young birds to get a cornish hen size chicken. Would love to hear how it goes.

Teacher- I am laughing so hard, sorry, I'm sure it was not so good, at the kid thing. But I have rescued many a chick from being bathed, dressed, or used as a toy carriage chicken (really, came in to find DD trying to tie a chicken to her toy horse carriage)! They (the kids) get ideas and put them into motion so fast it is unreal, yet it could take all day to clean a room...

Oh, and I forgot, I think, and could be wrong as I am new to the chicken world, that alot of your heavy breeds are going to be at least in part the multi-purpose breeds that are good for laying and for meat. I am pretty sure that they do take a bit longer to raise than the hybrid meat types, but I love their meat.

Just saying your looking at about 4-5 months of keeping these birds until they actually get big.If your looking for something fast just get cornish x's and your good to go.

Teacher,

Sorry to hear of the mishaps but I totally understand. I have 5 & 3 year old girls that walk around the yard with our Mille Fluer bantam and act as if she is the all mighty princess. So if you got your the first we of March. When in June are you processing? Are you raising them 90 days from start to finish? What weights are you hoping for?
Can't wait to hear more.

Pringle,

As for Cornish I am just not fond of them. I prefer a bird that takes a tad longer to grow out and has a firmer breast. Right now I am raising 100 Naked Necks for meat. Processing them at day 86. They should be right around 3 - 3.5 lbs I am guessing. I am starting them out at 28% protein for first month then dropping to 24% for remaining 2 months. Plus, they are great foragers so my feed bill should be lower. I am keeping a journal right now of the process.

I am only in my second year with chickens and was just wondering what "Heavy Breeds" were? I see they are just larger dual purpose birds and all cockerels from my understanding means they grow out faster for the FryPan Special. But I hope that have that going all summer. I may run a second batch of 100 to time with processing my turkeys.

Yeah, I laughed about the kids giving them a bath too... mostly because I expect my son will be doing the same stuff to mine this spring!

I ordered 50 of the fry pan special, I received quite
the assortment. BA's, SLW's, BO's, RIR's, and even a couple of EE's. EE's are very tasty, my favorite.
