We have cholla ('choi-ya") cactus on our place and a critter (rat probably) that likes to arm it's nests (several under/around/in the woodshed I'm remodeling for the henhouse) with thorn clusters, hundreds of them. Think of a cluster of 6-8 thorns 1/2 to 3/4 inch long radiating out from a central piece of stem about the size of a b-b. They are evil for humans to deal with - puncturing leather shoes and rubber soles, hooking onto anything on the ground so you watch EVERY thing you reach for.
Long explanation to get to the question......................should I worry about the thorns and my chickens? Cholla will be eliminated from the coop yard ASAP but the cast off thorn clusters are concerning.

I doubt the thorns or the thorn clusters will be a problem for chickens. Nevertheless, getting rid of the cacti seems to be a good idea.

I don't have any thorny or spiked plants around on account of the grandchildren. My chickens have done a lot of things over time, but have not gotten injured doing them.

We tore out all the cholla on our place a few years ago, but it is slowly growing back. We cleared out all the prickly pears from the chicken areas, but we still have some old stuff that we occasionally find. We also have some little barrel cactus looking things that only get about 2 inches tall. The chickens don't care about any of them, and ignore them. I don't like getting the spines in my shoes.....but they don't care.

Thank you both! I guess I am worrying for the chickens unnecessarily. The chollas days are numbered, but for only for my quality of life1
