cage bottom

i'v noticed that alot of people on this forum recommend the usage of wire for the flooring on cages for quail. frequently when i use metal cages with my ringneck doves i'l go out in the morning to find a dove half dead from blood loss because it got its toe caught in the wire corners somehow and ripped it's toe nail off. i have since ceased use of the metal cages with the doves, however i will be temporarily housing several quail in a rabbit style cage i guess, and its got a wire bottom, in any circumstance i prefer to use a solid floor to a wire one as i feel wire is detrimental to the birds health, but thats just me, in any case anybody else ever have quail get caught up in the wire and can i keep the on a solid floor [without changing it 12 times a day] thanks in advance.

On some mesh there is a rougher side usually where the solder weld is done, a slight edge can be left. The other side may be smoother.
You could use some plastic mesh, garden shops have this in half inch square size.
Then underneath this if you could leave an inch gap and place the wire mesh under the plastic mesh to stop any attacks from vermin etc

well, i don't really think it's the wire that beats up on them, they get there toes caught in the wire clips attaching the sides. in any case the quail will only be in the cages for a couple weeks for quarentine then they'l be out in an aviary, so they should be alright...
